Last February, when we launched our spring/summer 2019 campaign, New Voices,We made a call to all the amazing new voices in our community to show their work. The contest, featuring an international jury consisting of Sofía Sánchez de Betak (creative director and Mango’s brand ambassador), photographer Dan Martensen, stylist Aleksandra Woroniecka and Mango’s team, received more than one thousand entries. But there could only be one winner.
Lotus Green Theme
In a typical sunny-but-hazy London day, the Italian photographer captured the charm of the Dutch model Birgit Kos in a fashion story that transcends decades. Here she impersonates the 70s incombustible rock and bohemian spirit which was perfectly recalled by the it girls from the 90s and early 2000s. Baggy leather shorts, big faux-fur coats and statement leopard pieces became iconic then, and they still are now. This is fashion with no expiry date. Despite having trained in studios, fashion photographer Federico Sorrentino prefers fashion shots located in an urban context, devoid of conventional poses and static lights. His photography is characterised by an attention to geometries and perspectives, producing a sense of harmony.
” Why did you decide to enter Mango’s New Voices contest?”
Instagram – I found out about the contest watching one of Dan Martensen’s stories on Instagram. I tried to propose my portfolio without too many expectations given the international scope of it. I really hoped to join such an outstanding collaboration because I find Mango’s editorials really cool and inspiring.
Hierarchy and the Web
My references are fashion photographers such as Arthur Elgort or Peter Lindbergh, but also William Eggleston, Stephen Shore and Joel Meyerowitz, to name a few, and the masters of reportage, from which to draw inspiration for the promptness of gestures and the ability to improvise. I find my own expression in the street. My gaze is open to the suggestions of independent cinema and underground music culture that always resonate in the composition, in the light and in the choice of subjects, often models, whose natural beauty I exalt.
The company, in collaboration with experts in the field, has therefore developed two initiatives. The introduction of ECOWASH technology, by the company Jeanologia, has helped to reduce the consumption of water, energy and chemicals. The incorporation of the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) in garments also encourages the use of sustainable cotton farming techniques, reduces the consumption of water and chemicals and guarantees workers’ health and safety. Organic cotton, which reduces water consumption during cultivation, and recycled cotton, which encourages a circular economy, are likewise used.
